And finally: The famous pier at the harbour of St. Andrews. There is a tradition that the students of the University of St. Andrews walk over this pier every sunday, wearing their red robes. I've seen it once and you can even buy postcards of this event - but I never really grasped the sense behind this tradition.
That is, until Oli Walker explained it to me (Thanks, Oli!): The pier walk dates back to when the
visiting preachers would arrive by boat, because it was quicker than by
road. Out of courtesy, the students would accompany the preacher back to
his boat at the end of the pier. The time of the walk would usually be
governed by the tide, but these days, it takes place after the Sunday
Service at St Salvator's Chapel, at around 11.30am.
By the way, the picture above was taken on a Monday, so there's only a lonely tourist sitting on the pier.
